I do have a preference for movies where young, driven filmmakers take their first shot at exploring their artistry. Eraserhead is packed with "Lynchian" tropes that appear more unrefined - raw - than in his later, better (but not necessarily more interesting) movies. Here, images and soundscapes work together to create a kind of hypnotic and nightmarish mood that can only be found when fantasy/creativity is processed though a medium that the artist is still learning how to use. It's intuitive. It's magnificent. It's impossible to recreate.
